A contemporary new house on a tight block and budget.

Back of Black (Highbury)

Downsizing, the baby boomers look for a plot overlooking Black Hill. They purchase a block only nine meters wide and call the architect. They have some ideas and a strict budget. What can we do? Here it is. We made a long narrow house feel wider by locating the entry in the middle of the home, reducing public corridor space, inserting a courtyard central to the plan and as always using a relationship with the outdoors to make this house feel bigger than it is but comfortable.  The design strategy was to house visitors downstairs, a master bedroom and living environment upstairs. We even managed to squeeze some water bladders under the house.  A cozy, empty nest, for the kids to come and visit, on occasions.
